Education in Orange County is under the direction of the Orange County Department of Education. For the most part, education in Orange County is excellent and heading in the right direction. I personally have a passion for the education system and believe we can always do more for our children.
In 2010, I ran for the Cypress School District Board of Trustees. During that election I pointed out that our education leaders don’t spend enough time in the “real world” and instead, they make too many decisions without knowing the reality of what teachers, parents and students deal with on a daily basis. I promised to visit every school in the district multiple times a year. I still feel this is something our education leaders should be doing.
Enrollment is on the decline in Orange County schools and this is largely impacted by our failure to compete economically. When large businesses move out of state, many families go with them. That leaves a declining enrollment for Orange County to deal with.
Proficiency numbers have risen a great deal. The system is working as it currently sits. I think with some small tweaks, it could do even better. As a Supervisor, I would support the educational system in our county. I would come alongside the Department of Education and promote educational seminars and events that will enable our children to grow and prosper.
As a parent, I worry about the future of the children in our county. I want to be sure they are given all the tools they need to be successful in society. It is my goal to see every person graduating from Orange County schools to have an edge over other students in a similar place in life. I feel that the Supervisors can definitely do more to assist the Department of Education in achieving this goal of mine.
